Traveling with Cannabis in Nevada
Where Is Pot Legal in Nevada?
Everywhere. As of November 2016, marijuana may be used medicinally and recreationally throughout the state of Nevada. In order to legally use and purchase marijuana for recreational purposes, you must be 21 or older. Nevada laws permit you to buy up to 1 oz. of pot at a time.
You must be 18 or older and have a medical marijuana card in order to buy cannabis for medicinal purposes. Nevada laws allow you to buy no more than 2.5 oz. of marijuana within a 14-day span. (This includes a variety of cannabis products.)
Can I Bring Pot into Nevada?
Traveling with marijuana can be tricky, especially because state laws vary widely.
Road-tripping with marijuana is a bad idea if you intend to cross state lines. For example, if you drive from California (where recreational marijuana is legal) to Colorado (where it is also legal), you could be pulled over in Utah (where it is not legal in any capacity). According to a report from The Nevada Independent, Nevada Highway Patrol Captain Andy McAfee has stated that transporting marijuana across state lines is still illegal and that doing can earn you a misdemeanor (or a felony, if you have a lot of it). If you are pulled over and caught, you could end up with 6 months in jail and a $1,000 fine on your hands.
Flying to Nevada with marijuana in tow also may not be wise. Airports are still federally supervised entities subject to U.S. laws, which still treat marijuana as an illegal substance. When it comes to flying with pot, just don’t.
