The Nevada Highway Patrol made 13 drunk driving arrests in Reno over the
Nevada Day weekend. The Reno-Gazette Journal reported that the patrol
made 35 DUI arrests statewide.
While the number of DUI arrests in Reno declined from the 17 reported last
year, the overall number of drunk driving arrests during Nevada Day weekend
increased this year, compared to the 25 arrests made by troopers last year.
Our Reno DUI defense lawyers encourage anyone charged with drunk driving
to contact us, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The average cost of a drunk
driving conviction has been estimated at $10,000, including lost wages,
fines and court costs and increased insurance premiums. Money spent on
an experienced drunk driving defense attorney is likely to be money well spent.
A recent investigation by the RGJ found that DUI arrests in some areas
of Nevada have increased by more than 50 percent in the last decade. And
the tiered nature of Nevada DUI law means repeat offenders face tougher
penalties even if years pass between arrests. Additionally, having a drunk
driving conviction on your record may make it more likely that you will
be stopped by law enforcement and charged again.
When you consider the push to further toughen drunk driving laws, including
a proposed reduction from .08 to .05 blood-alcohol content, it becomes
apparent that your chances of being stopped and charged for DUI are going
to increase in the future, even if many of those arrests are marginal cases.
Additionally, the legislature has been under pressure for years to lower
the blood-alcohol level for mandatory assessment and treatment from .18
to .15. The issue has failed to pass during each of the past three sessions.
But officials are also under pressure to enforce laws requiring ignition
interlock devices for those convicted of felony DUI in Nevada and even
to enact new laws requiring the devices for everyone convicted of drunk driving.
In many cases, a reduction or dismissal of drunk driving charges is possible.
Particularly for first-time offenders, where keeping a driving record
free of a DUI conviction is the smartest move you can make. In other cases,
even those involving repeat offenders, evidence can frequently be challenged
by an experienced Reno defense lawyer. Probable cause for the car stop,
the results of field sobriety tests and breathalyzer examinations and
the training and conduct of officers involved should all be questioned.
Too often, defendants think a drunk driving charge can’t be won,
or is not worth fighting when charged as a misdemeanor. Nothing could
be further from the truth. A DUI conviction will impact your quality of
life for years to come and can often prevent you from landing certain
jobs and may even impact your ability to join the military or qualify
for government assistance, including student loans.
When it comes to drunk driving charges in Reno, an aggressive defense is
the best bet for protecting your freedom, your livelihood and the financial
well-being of you and your family.
